David J. Griffiths was born on December 5, 1942 in Arlington, Virginia, to parents who were both professors at the University of Washington.

He attended Harvard University, and earned B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in physics in 1964, 1966, and 1970.
His dissertation was entitled “Covariant Approach to Massless Field Theory in the Radiation Gauge” and was supervised by Sidney Coleman.
